License, Diploma, or Certificate: What’s the Difference?

One of the most common questions we receive from future nail technicians is:
“Will I receive a license after completing your course?”
Let’s explain the difference clearly and honestly, because a license, diploma, and certificate are not the same thing. Each document serves a different purpose.
Who issues a nail license in New York?
A professional Nail Specialty License is not issued by an instructor or a regular private school. It is issued by New York State after the applicant completes all required steps established by the state.
A license is an official legal authorization to provide nail services professionally and receive payment for your work in New York.
That is why a short professional course lasting one, two, or three days cannot issue or replace a New York State license.
What do professional schools provide?
After completing our training, students receive a Certificate of Completion.
This certificate confirms that you:

✨ Received theoretical knowledge
✨ Practiced under the supervision of an instructor
✨ Successfully completed your training at our school
Depending on the school, this document may be called a certificate, diploma, or training certificate. However, it is not the same as a New York State professional license.
Does that mean a certificate is not important?
Not at all.
A professional certificate confirms your education, training, and the techniques you have studied. It can strengthen your portfolio, demonstrate your professional development, and show employers or clients that you have invested in your skills.
Certificates may also be requested by organizations that assist with the licensing process as proof that you have completed professional nail training.

Why are short professional courses still necessary?
